Certificate in Counselling Skills Level 2

Certificate in Counselling Skills Level 2 (Year 1) Available April 2011 and September 2011

This course is the core to all the other counselling courses.

The course is taught part time weekly over 30 weeks and will teach you all necessary tools to qualify you to progress onto the higher level courses.

The course teaches the basic skills that counsellors require to work effectively with clients. It is based on the person centred model and uses Egan’s three-stage model of exploration, understanding and action. As part of this course, you will undertake training and experience of active listening, defining and explaining counselling, the counsellor’s personal self-awareness, the exploration, understanding and action skills required in person centred counselling, demonstration of counselling skills via written counselling scenarios, issues of confidentiality, issues of referral and supervision.

The course is a 90-hour course taken over three terms each term lasting ten weeks. In addition to the ten assignments at the end of each unit the course incorporates practical work and continual assessment by the course tutor. Students will also keep an individual course journal and there will be a final practical assessment at the end of the course to demonstrate the student’s ability counsel a client.
